Today, 3 December, we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. For the Members of the European Parliament from Fidesz–KDNP, however, work on disability policy is a priority every single day of the year. “Our goal is to ensure that the real needs and experiences of persons with disabilities are consistently reflected in decision-making in Brussels” emphasized Pál Szekeres, fencing champion and former state secretary. “Every day we work to ensure that effective, practical, and reality-based decisions are made both within and beyond the European Parliament,” he added.
We are committed to creating opportunities that allow persons with disabilities to become fully valued members of society. Politicians with disabilities have supported our work for decades, both in the European Parliament and in the Hungarian National Assembly. In recent years, Hungary has launched unprecedented developments – from early childhood intervention to accessibility, and from sport to culture. As a result, the employment rate of persons with disabilities in Hungary is now above the EU average.
It is of particular importance to us that disability policy should not be seen solely as a social issue, but also as a driver of social innovation, technological development, and inclusive education. We therefore support initiatives that promote access to smart technologies, improve opportunities for children with special educational needs, and develop public services in ways that ensure equal access to civic participation for all citizens. Our delegation supports every EU initiative that improves accessibility for persons with disabilities, strengthens their participation in the labour market, and expands the conditions for independent living. “Our political goal remains unchanged: to build a country and a Europe in which persons with disabilities are full members of the community and where their rights are never compromised,” Pál Szekeres underlined.
